The annual Hartsville American Legion Post 53 benefit dinner will support local Post 53 activities. Post 53 sponsors an American Legion baseball team, an American Legion Ladies fast pitch softball team, sends rising high school senior boys to Boys State, conducts an oratorical contest about the United States constitution for high school age students, and assists with local projects for veterans and youth. Nationally, The American Legion supports veterans, children and youth, promotes Americanism, and promotes a strong national defense. Post 53 has helped preserve the Marion Avenue Cemetery in which many veterans are interred, participated in Veterans Day events, and helped local veterans with activities such as installing a wheelchair ramp, transportation, and other local needs. The Auxiliary Unit associated with Post 53 sends rising high school senior girls to Girls State. Boys State and Girls State both teach the attending youth how state and local governments operate.
