National Youth Art Month Showcase

March 5, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

The Hartsville Museum will showcase student artworks from the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) Monday, March 5- March 31, 2020 in conjunction with National Youth Art Month. Museum hours are Monday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Works in the GSSM Student Art Exhibition 2020 were created through multiple modes of discovery – including traditional visual arts courses and innovative, student-choice opportunities in GSSM’s on campus art studio. Various media represented in the student exhibit include: graphite, charcoal, conte, pen & ink, colored pencils, acrylic on canvas, watercolor, carved wood, altered books, stained indigenous terracotta and glazed stoneware and non-traditional media.

Students engage with professional artist Patz Fowle to deepen their understanding of visual art while developing skills, techniques and processes to create meaningful 2-D and 3-D works. In addition to art courses, Ms. Fowle also offers residential students exciting, student-choice opportunities. Students may access GSSM’s art studio to work independently, they are invited to various creative workshops, students may lead workshops, or they may choose to collaborate on worthy causes like the Mother Earth Project; a mixed media sculpture created with non-traditional materials like post-consumer cast-offs and found objects.

The public is invited to an art reception at the Hartsville Museum to celebrate Youth Art Month and GSSM student art, Thursday, March 5 from 4:30-6:30. The museum is located at 222 N 5th street in Hartsville, SC. Contact: Museum Manager, Andrea Steen
