History of Hartsville
A Legacy of Innovation: The History of Hartsville, South Carolina
Hartsville’s story begins with Thomas Edward Hart, who arrived in the area in 1817 and established a home along the banks of Black Creek. His son, John Lide Hart, continued this legacy by developing what is now the heart of downtown. There, he launched several early industries, including a carriage factory, a steam-powered sawmill, and a grist mill—laying the foundation for a community rooted in entrepreneurship and ingenuity.
One of Hartsville’s most influential figures, James Lide Coker, helped shape the town’s identity through vision, enterprise, and leadership. Along with his family, he established a seed company, oil mill, and fertilizer plant, and opened the J.L. Coker & Company General Store—a massive brick building that still stands proudly as a downtown landmark. The Cokers also founded Welsh Neck High School, which would evolve into Coker University, and created the Southern Novelty Company—now known as Sonoco Products Company, one of the world’s leading packaging and industrial products providers.
Hartsville was officially chartered as a town on December 11, 1891, during a period of rapid growth in business, industry, and population. Since then, the city has continued to build upon its legacy of progress.
Today, Hartsville is a thriving center of industry, education, and reinvention. The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics now occupies the site of the former Hartsville Cotton Mill—an inspiring example of honoring the past while investing in the future. Our historic downtown, scenic Prestwood Lake, and robust community development efforts all contribute to a high quality of life and an enduring spirit of innovation.
